Angel Island

I spent one day hiking Angel Island out in San Francisco Bay. There are very few people on the island so it is very tranquil. The hike around the island passes through many historical areas.

First was the Immigration Station, this is where Asian immigrants entered the country. It was often a place used to refuse entry to the US. Immigrants held on the island carved poems into the walls were they were held.

Next was the World War II base where soldiers were prepared for transport to the Pacific basin.

The hike included amazing views in every direction.

Next was a 1960 missile silo.

Next was a Civil War base used to protect the entry into the bay. I saw several deer here.

Finally I was back at the ferry dock. This was once a quarantine center in the 1940s for ships entering the bay.

Activities

I spent my days wandering the streets on a San Francisco. Two activities involving food were very nice. One was the Saturday morning market at the Ferry Terminal Building. There was wonderful produce, delicious baked goods and ready made meals. I used the opportunity to stock up on goodies.

The other was a community event at the Presidio. In the old parade grounds was a huge food truck/food tent event. It was definitely the best food truck food I’ve seen. It was so good I returned the next week when Matthew visited.

Afterward I hiked over to the Pacific Ocean and hiked along the bluffs and bunkers above the ocean.

Catching up

Well I had a great visit to San Francisco but was lax in my posting of photos activities. I spent a very relaxing week perched on the steep side of Telegraph Hill right below Coit Tower. The house was a great 70’s era apartment featured in the movie Petulia staring George C. Scott.

It was 300 steps up from the wharf area but luckily only 20 steps down from the Coit Tower bus. The Filbert Steps were right outside the door. Along them were very nice gardens that made the trek up nice.
